Poland plans to buy long-range missiles for F-16 from the US
Poland will sign a contract with the United States for the supply of AGM-158 JASSM-ER cruise missiles with a range of up to 1000 kilometers for F-16 fighter jets. This will cost Warsaw approximately $735 million.
On Tuesday, May 28, the contract will be signed by Polish Defense Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz. This is stated on the website of the country's defense ministry.
The Polish military already possesses these missiles, but, as our neighboring country's Defense Ministry noted, the war in Ukraine has shown how important it is to be able to hit targets far from the front line.
"The war in Ukraine has shown how important it is to be able to hit targets located even very far from the front line, so the range of the missiles to be purchased is approximately 1000 kilometers," the Polish Defense Ministry said.
The ministry noted that these missiles will be delivered in 2026-2030.
"This is a kind of addition to the BARBARA balloon system, the delivery of which was signed last week," the ministry added.
The JASSM is an American precision air-to-ground cruise missile developed by Lockheed Martin Corporation. It is designed to engage important, highly protected both stationary and moving targets in all weather conditions and at any time of the day.
The AGM-158 modification differs from the basic version by having larger fuel tanks and a more economical twin-circuit turbojet engine. This allows the missile to hit targets at a distance of up to 1000 kilometers from the launch site.
Currently, the operators of these missiles are Poland, Finland, Australia and the Netherlands.
As reported, Poland has supported Ukraine's permission to use Western weapons on the territory of the Russian Federation. This was stated by Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski. He believes that the West should stop constantly limiting itself in supporting our country.
