In Israel, during a Hamas attack on the city of Ofakim, a prominent Kharkiv and Israeli theoretical physicist, Serhiy Gredeskul, and his wife were killed. The couple was killed by terrorists who broke into their home.
This information was confirmed by the Physical and Technical Institute of Low Temperatures (PTINT), Status Quo reports. It is reported that the man and woman were both 81 years old.
Serhiy Gredeskul was born in 1942 in Sverdlovsk to Soviet physicist Andriy Gredeskul. He graduated from Kharkiv University in 1964 and worked at the Kharkiv Institute of Physics and Technology, and later for a long time at the Physical and Technical Institute of Low Temperatures of the Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. In 1990, he received his doctorate in physics and mathematics.
Sergiy Gredeskul was also a laureate of the State Prize of Ukraine, co-author of the famous book "Introduction to the Theory of Disordered Systems" and author of more than a hundred scientific articles.
Since 1991, he lived in Israel and worked as a professor at Ben-Gurion University until 2012.
He was killed along with his wife on October 8, 2023, in the city of Ofakim during a terrorist attack by the Palestinian Islamist movement against Israel.
It should be noted that more than 1,200 Israelis have been killed as a result of Hamas's attack on Israel.
Also, according to the latest data from the Ministry of Health of Gaza, 900 Palestinians were killed, about half of them women and children, and another 4,500 people were injured. In the West Bank, 21 Palestinians were killed and several dozen were injured.
As of October 11, the total known number of victims of the military conflict in Israel among Ukrainian citizens has increased to three. Nine other Ukrainian citizens were injured, and their condition and places of hospitalization are currently being investigated.
