"This is a lie": Zelenskyy reacts to WSJ information on Ukraine's losses in the war

President at a press conference

The Wall Street Journal wrote that Ukraine allegedly lost 80,000 of its servicemen in the war. This is not true, the real figure is much lower.

This is how President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy commented on the article at a meeting with journalists on September 20. He called the data published by the American media a "lie."

"80 thousand? This is a lie. The real figure is much lower than what was published. Significantly," the head of state said.

In general, the article of September 17 stated that since the beginning of the full-scale war, the number of dead and wounded Ukrainians and Russians has reached approximately one million people. Citing confidential Ukrainian sources, the publication noted that as of the beginning of the year, 80,000 Ukrainian soldiers had been killed and 400,000 wounded. Estimates of Russian losses vary: according to Western intelligence, there may be about 200,000 dead and 400,000 wounded.

As a reminder, as of September 21, 2024, according to the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, the Russian army lost 640,920 people in death and wounded. Over the past day alone, Ukrainian soldiers neutralized 1440 Russian occupiers at the front.

As reported by OBOZ.UA, on September 17, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy awarded another 509 Ukrainian servicemen with state awards for service and defense of Ukraine's independence. Unfortunately, 142 of them were awarded posthumously.
