NYT reports on more than 300 captive Russians moved to Sumy prison
Some of the Russian soldiers who were captured during the Ukrainian offensive in the Kursk region of the Russian Federation are being held in a prison in Sumy. The penitentiary has estimated that 320 of soldiers have already been moved there, 80% of whom are conscripts.
This was reported by New York Times journalists after they visited the prison on August 16. According to their observations, many of these Russians allegedly barely graduated from high school and had only a few months of training.
It is noted that on the day of their visit, 71 captured Russian soldiers or officers were held in the prison. The outlet published a number of photos, indicating that some of the prisoners had shrapnel or gunshot wounds.
"After taking the prisoners, they are sent further away from the fighting. The Russians are also kept in basement cells to protect them from possible air strikes," the publication said, citing the Ukrainian military.
These conscripts and volunteers, speaking to NYT journalists, described how they arrived to defend Kursk region by order of their commanders. According to them, they divided them into platoons (about 30 people each) and left them in concrete or soil fortifications located about 1.6 km from each other along the border. There, the Russian soldiers faced a surprise attack by the Ukrainian army and quickly stopped fighting.
For example, a 21-year-old Russian man, Igor, claimed that Ukrainian artillery had been reinforced a few days before the Kursk operation. However, despite the reports, their commanders did not react, so only 5 of 12 soldiers from his group survived the attack.
His peer Dmitry from the Komi region said that their radio stations stopped working on the day of the attack on August 6. They received no orders. Thus, they tried to retreat but failed and were captured.
As reported, during the operation in the Kursk region of the Russian Federation, Ukrainian defenders are capturing the whole Russian companies. All of the occupiers are transported to Ukraine for future prisoner exchanges. For example, on August 14, SSU special forces captured 102 Russian soldiers at once. Among them are are many Kadyrovites.
