Automatic defeat: FIFA head proposes new rule in football

Gianni Infantino suggested that teams whose fans showed racism during the match should be awarded a defeat. The president of the International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) made this statement after the scandal with Milan goalkeeper Michael Meehan during the Italian championship match against Udinese (3:2).

Meehan refused to continue the game because of racist insults he heard from the stands. The goalkeeper went to the dressing room and was persuaded to return to the field for five minutes.

Commenting on the incident, Infantino said that the events that took place on Saturday in Udine were "extremely disgusting and unacceptable." The FIFA head emphasized that racism and other forms of discrimination have no place in football or in society.

"In addition to the three-step process (match stoppage, match re-stoppage, match termination), we should introduce an automatic defeat for the team whose fans have shown racism and caused the match to be stopped, as well as close stadiums around the world to racists and seek criminal charges against them," the Swiss wrote on X (formerly Twitter).
