The Verkhovna Rada adopted a law on the use of English in Ukraine: what it provides for

Members of the Verkhovna Rada have passed Bill No. 9432 on the use of the English language in Ukraine in the second reading by a majority vote. 236 parliamentarians voted in favor.

This was announced by MP Oleksiy Honcharenko. It is known that the much-vaunted bill No. 9432 provides for the official recognition of English as one of the languages of international communication in Ukraine.

It will also define the categories of positions for which candidates must know English.

In addition, the law regulates the specifics of using English in the work of government agencies, local governments, education, culture, transportation, healthcare, etc.

MP Yaroslav Zhelezniak said that there was a discussion in the parliament about amendment No. 336, which was introduced the day before the law was passed.

It provides for budget support for cinemas for showing English-language films. The amendment was supported by 226 votes.

As OBOZ.UA previously reported, MP Volodymyr Viatrovych of the European Solidarity faction opposed the amendment on budget support for English-language film screenings. In his opinion, it is absurd and harmful to spend state money to encourage screenings of films in a foreign language instead of Ukrainian during the war.

As a reminder, in August 2022, it became known that the Ministry of Culture was developing a draft law on the special status of the English language in Ukraine. The initiative was intended to promote the integration of Ukrainians into the European community.
