Tulips are wonderful, unpretentious flowers that will make an ideal garden decoration. Experienced gardeners emphasize that these flowers are best planted before winter.

When to plant tulips

During dormant periods, the bulb needs cool conditions, otherwise the flower will not be able to form. Some gardeners advise using the refrigerator to germinate the bulbs before the spring season, but in practice, this method is not very effective.

It is better to just do an autumn planting. First of all, you should take into account the peculiarities of the region and the weather. In Ukraine, tulips are usually planted from mid-September to mid-October.

In fact, planting in the ground should be done a month before the onset of stable frosts. It will take about four weeks for rooting.

If frosts come unexpectedly, you need to quickly mulch the tulips with dry leaves, compost, or peat.

How to grow tulips

• Preliminarily inspect the bulbs: they should be dense, smooth, not overdried, without spots or cracks.
• The size of the bulbs should be at least 3-4 cm in diameter, otherwise the flowers will bloom only in a year.

• Before planting, it is better to disinfect the bulbs in any fungicide - 30 minutes is enough.
• Tulips grow best in sunny areas with loose soil.
• The distance between the bulbs should be 10-15 centimeters. Each bulb should be buried in the soil three times its height, and if the soil is heavy, two times its height.
• Add 1 teaspoon of double superphosphate and wood ash to the hole, mixing it with the soil.
