Which cars are the most expensive to repair: five leading brands

A car can be a profitable investment that won't lose value over the years. Some brands have a high reliability rating and require minimal maintenance over the life of the vehicle. When you buy a vehicle, you sign up for long-term expenses: fuel, insurance, taxes, maintenance, and repairs.

In some cases, car repairs alone can be much more expensive than you expect. Experts have named the car brands that can be too expensive to maintain in the end.

BMW

BMW ranks fifth in the list of cars that will cost a pretty penny to maintain.

Jeff Cudd, founder of Find The Best Car Price, noted that common repairs, such as replacing a timing belt on a BMW, can be too expensive.

"BMW is known for its high engineering standards, which can translate into expensive parts and specialized labor," said Cudd. "That means that not every repair shop will be able to fix a car of this brand. Spare parts may also be in short supply.

According to KBB, the total cost of servicing a BMW for 10 years averages $9,500.

Volkswagen

The Volkswagen brand, which includes SUVs, sedans, compact cars, and more, can be quite affordable at first glance. Even new ones have a relatively low initial retail price. But the cost of maintenance and repair will be quite high.

"The costs are high because Volkswagen cars are prone to problems and less reliable than most other brands on the market," said Melanie Monsoon, an automotive industry expert at AutoInsurance.

Mercedes-Benz

Mercedes-Benz, like BMW, is a luxury brand with very high maintenance costs. According to Cudd, replacing a transmission on a Mercedes-Benz can be more expensive than on other models. Depending on what other repairs you need to make, you could end up with a much larger bill from a car mechanic.

Mitsubishi

Mitsubishi is not about luxury cars. However, this car brand is very expensive to maintain. You can pay double the cost of repairs and maintenance.

For example, the transmission is one of the most common parts to fail. Car owners often complain about the need to replace the EGR cooler.

Chrysler

Of course, Chrysler is quite expectedly included in this rating. A premium car will require extremely expensive maintenance. And parts and spare parts for Chrysler are not so easy to find.
