Rules of etiquette: how to behave in public transport

Nowhere are the rules of etiquette more neglected than in public transportation. Each of us has at least once sat next to passengers who cough without covering their mouths, take flavorful meatball sandwiches out of their bags, or talk loudly on video calls.

Rule 1

Take care of your personal hygiene. When sneezing or coughing, be sure to cover your mouth and nose - but not with your palms. Do not make life difficult for people sitting next to you. A quick check of your own hygiene before boarding can make the trip more enjoyable for everyone.

Rule 2

Keep the noise level down. Have you ever sat next to people who are talking loudly, not paying attention to their neighbors? This behavior is very annoying. Speak as quietly as possible and do not distract other passengers. Do not play music on your smartphone or other gadgets - use headphones.

Rule 3

Try not to eat in the bus. If there is no other place to eat, make sure you eat in a proper manner: do not litter in the cabin and do not eat food that smells too strong - it can disturb others.

Rule 4

Respect other people's personal space. Don't put your leg over the other person's leg, as this deprives other passengers of their space. When using public transportation, make sure you don't take up too much space - other passengers have also paid for their fare and have the right to travel in comfort.

Rule 5

Be patient. Delays and queues are part of public transportation. Remain patient and polite, even when things don't go as planned. Respect the queue. Don't hold up other passengers when getting on and off. Pushing and aggression only leads to chaos.
