Considering how much dirt and food particles enter the kitchen sink daily, it should be no surprise that drain pipes quickly become clogged with debris. Over time, this leads to an unpleasant odor.

If you don't take action in time, the fumes from decay and rotting products will soon spread through the sink stopper. Experts say it is advisable to regularly include sewer flushing in kitchen cleaning.

Method 1

The possibilities for cleaning with vinegar are endless, not to mention the cost-effectiveness and environmental friendliness of the product.

Take half a cup of baking soda and pour it down the drain. After that, add a cup of white vinegar, as this solution will cause a natural fizzing reaction that breaks down dirt, bacteria, and buildup. Let the mixture sit for about 15 minutes, then rinse with hot water.

Method 2

Orange or lemon zest and table salt are another effective life hack.

"By placing the thinly sliced zest directly into the drain and turning on the hot water, the natural oils help break down the fat," said Brian Toward, an expert at Wholesale Domestic.

The salt acts as a mild abrasive, removing any buildup.

Method 3

Invest in a plunger or drainage snake.

A plunger is a rubber suction cup that works with suction power to remove any buildup and clogs that may be releasing an unpleasant odor. Seal the plunger over the drain and push it up and down to create pressure in the pipe, which then moves the water to clear the clog from the inside.

If the plunger is not enough, a drain snake, which is a long, flexible pipe or cable that is inserted into the sinks in the kitchen or bathroom, can be an effective solution. It then unfurls and twists inside the pipe with a handle at one end, and removes build-up or clogs.

Method 4

Of course, it's best to use eco-friendly methods, but sometimes a stronger solution is needed. Look for formulations that are safe for all plumbing systems. Wear protective gloves and goggles if necessary. Keep children and pets out of the room when using harsh chemicals.

Do not mix drain unblockers with other cleaning chemicals or acids, as this may result in the release of hazardous gases.

Precautionary measures

Never pour grease and oil down the drain, as this will not only cause blockages in the pipes but will also deteriorate the condition of the sewer by promoting build-ups known as "grease mountains." These are stone-like substances made up of grease, oils, dirt, and substances that cannot be flushed away. These blockages then trap food particles and other pieces of debris, creating an ideal environment for bacterial growth and causing unpleasant odors.
