While most of the popular locations in Europe are suffering from a glut of tourists, there are still places on the continent where you can have a great vacation without jostling in the street with other vacationers and without annoying the locals. One of these places is located in a very picturesque corner of the Balkans.

According to Travel Off Path, we are talking about Mostar, a fabulous town in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Here you can find many historical monuments, enjoy the beautiful weather and crystal clear river. And you will also be pleasantly surprised by the local prices.

For example, Mostar is home to one of the most iconic bridges in Europe. It rises above the stream, the water in which is so turquoise that it seems fake. However, this is exactly how the Neretva River, which flows through the city, looks like.

Unlike other popular European tourist destinations, Mostar is often overlooked by travelers. Especially those who are visiting Europe for the first time. Although it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site where traces of a rich medieval and Ottoman history can be found.

The reconstructed bridge is an exact replica of a 16th century crossing that was bombed during the war. It is adjoined by the Mehmed Pasha Koski Mosque with its minaret, which offers a breathtaking view of the city. On either side of the bridge, winding cobblestone streets lead to ethnic bazaars and secret courtyards. At almost every turn you'll find colorful cafes and eateries.

You can also stroll along the more secluded Crooked Bridge in Mostar. Here there is not such a lively flow of pedestrians. The Neretva House, a symbol of the Bosnian struggle, and Kajtaz, an Ottoman-era house with beautifully preserved old Oriental furniture, are also worth a visit.

Apart from its obvious architectural value, Mostar is incredibly pleasant to visit during the velvet season. The temperature here rises to 27 degrees during the day and drops to 15 degrees at night. The weather is still warm and sunny, but it is no longer hot.

In general, Mostar is one of the most affordable destinations in Europe in the fall. You can settle in with glamor for 75 dollars a night. A night in a four-star hotel will cost about 50 dollars. And a room in a hostel can cost as little as $15.

The U.S. State Department classifies Bosnia and Herzegovina as a Level 2 destination. This means that it is quite safe here. The main threat to tourists in the country is pickpockets. However, American tourists who have already visited the city say that it is almost unrealistic to encounter such a nuisance. Instead, you are more likely to be greeted by smiling locals who are happy to have visitors.

If you want to learn more about the tragic history of Bosnia, which has been through many wars, book a tour of Mostar. You will see all the scars left on its face by armed conflicts. The walking tour lasts about 2 hours and 30 minutes. It starts from the Hamman Museum twice a day, at 9:30 and 18:00 and covers all the main sights. Remuneration to the guide is from 10 to 50 dollars - there is no fixed price, you can pay at your discretion.
