In connection with the transition of the OCU and UGCC to the New Julian calendar, the dates of church holidays have shifted by 13 days. Believers who used to celebrate Epiphany on December 19 will now celebrate the baptism of Jesus on January 6.

Epiphany is one of the biggest Christian holidays. Read about the new date and history of the holiday in the OBOZ.UA article.

Date of Epiphany

According to the Gospel, Jesus was baptized in the Jordan River. In the Christian tradition, this event is one of the most important.

Many rituals are associated with Epiphany. For example, priests sanctify water by immersing a cross in it. According to beliefs, water blessed on this day has special powers. In 2024, Epiphany will be celebrated for the first time on January 6.

History of the holiday

According to the events described in the New Testament, Jesus' ministry began when he reached the age of 30. Jesus came to the Jordan River, where he was baptized by John the Baptist.

This event was extremely important in Jesus' life. After his baptism, the heavens opened, the spirit of the Lord descended in the form of a white dove, and a voice came from heaven: "This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased."

It was after the baptism that Jesus' ministry began, so this holiday is special for believers.

It is customary to bless water and store it in containers throughout the year. It is believed that the water blessed on Epiphany has healing properties and can cure many diseases.
