When in September 2024 the day of the autumnal equinox: date and omens
The equinox has long had a special meaning in many cultures and was considered the beginning of a new year. In the ancient Slavs, for example, the year consisted of spring-summer and fall-winter cycles. The year was traditionally counted according to the beginning and end of field work. The latter fell exactly on the fall equinox.
From an astronomical point of view, the equinox is the moment when the center of the solar disk crosses the equator of the Earth. OBOZ.UA tells when in September 2024 will be the autumnal equinox and what omens are associated with this period.
What is the equinox
During the equinox, the day lasts as long as the night. It occurs twice a year: in the spring and in the fall. After the fall equinox, the day becomes shorter than the night.
In 2024, the equinox falls on September 22. On this day, natural phenomena have long been given great importance. They were followed by the weather and crops for the next year.
Omen for the fall equinox
The September equinox opens the fall cycle of festivals and rituals associated with the harvest and preparation for winter.
If the sun shines on the equinox, and the weather is warm, almost summer - the winter will be short and mild.
If birds fly away en masse to warm lands - you should expect a cold snap and a severe frosty winter.
If it rains on the equinox - the fall will be warm and mushroomy, and winter will be snowy.
Folk traditions and beliefs
With the equinox opened a new cycle in the year, so it was customary to get rid of everything old and negative. You can do a general cleaning, throw out junk, go through things, etc.
Also from ancient times it was customary to visit cemeteries and pray for the repose of deceased relatives.
During the fall equinox, it is better to avoid evil thoughts, quarrels or conflicts.
There is a long-standing omen that on the equinox you should not borrow money or ask someone to lend you money - because the whole next year will be spent in poverty.
Ukrainians traditionally lit candles in their homes as a symbol of protection. There was a belief that it was on the fall equinox that the spirits of ancestors came to their homes. It was customary to bake loaves of grain from the new harvest. The loaf was considered a symbol of prosperity and wealth.
