What is known for the Swiss city of Basel, which will host Eurovision 2025: interesting facts and places
The organizers of Eurovision 2025 have recently officially announced that next year's contest will be hosted by the Swiss city of Basel. The powerful cultural center of Switzerland, located on the border of France and Germany, is striking with the number of unique attractions and is preparing to welcome numerous Eurofans on May 13, 15 and 17, 2025.
Thanks to its location, Basel will be an excellent symbol of musical unity. This thesis is confirmed by the amazing festival, better known as Fasnacht, held annually on the banks of the Rhine River. The festival is no less famous than the carnivals in Venice and Rio de Janeiro.
Basel Fasnacht
For three days a year, the streets of Basel are filled with music and costumed processions. The seemingly reserved Swiss allow themselves to indulge in a bit of fun, partying day and night. It should be noted that Carnival is a carefully organized event: the celebrations are subject to strict rules and true Swiss discipline.
Altstadt (Old Town)
One of the best things to do in Basel is to simply wander around the city, letting it unfold before you. After all, parts of Basel's old town date back to the 15th century, and the Altstadt is often referred to as one of the most beautiful and preserved old towns in all of Europe. Locals advise exploring it on foot, as old and new combine perfectly here.
Town Hall and Marktplatz
Much of the old town is centered around the City Hall, and the building itself occupies a place of honor in Basel's central square (Marktplatz). The Town Hall is about five hundred years old, and it is now home to the cantonal parliament - Switzerland is divided into cantons, and Basel is part of the canton of Basel-Stadt.
Basel Cathedral (Baseler Münster)
Basel's impressive cathedral, located in the heart of the city, is a must-see on any trip. The Gothic building dates back to the 11th century. The cathedral is the final resting place of several prominent figures, including the philosopher Erasmus of Rotterdam. It should also be noted that entry inside the red sandstone building is free, making Basel Cathedral one of the best attractions in the city.
Vitra Design Museum
As quirky in appearance as the designs stored inside, the Vitra Design Museum is located about forty-five minutes by public transportation from the city center. Dedicated to the exploration of design, the building itself was designed by Frank Gary and hosts two temporary exhibitions each year.
Kunstmuseum
One of the best things to do in Basel is to visit the giant art museum. It is home to the largest and most important art collection in Switzerland, with the museum's first roots going back to the Cabinet of Amerbach. At that time, the city acquired numerous works by Hans Holbein for the benefit of the public. The Kunstmuseum is thus not only one of the most important collections in Switzerland, but also one of the oldest art museums in Europe.
Spalentor's Medieval Gate
If you're interested in medieval history, you simply must go to the medieval Spalentor Gate, which was once part of the fortified walls that surrounded the city. Today, the tower is located near the old town of Basel.
St. Paul's Church
St. Paul's Church, known in German as Pauluskirche, was built at the turn of the 20th century. With some beautiful stained glass windows and Art Nouveau architecture, this church building is also the only round church in Basel. Nearby are some of the best places to admire the city.
