Makeup is primarily an area for self-expression, so you should only follow fashion trends when they are relevant to your face and skin type. Currently, the trend is for maximum naturalness. It would seem that the era of contouring is a thing of the past, but in fact, this technique is experiencing a new revival.

Vertical contouring is especially appropriate for those with a round face shape. A simple way of applying cosmetics that will create a lifting effect and visually lengthen the face is gaining popularity online.

"Lifestyle is popular in Asian countries. Vertical contouring can work on any skin tone. The shadow covers a larger area than when using the traditional technique, so it looks as natural as possible," said makeup artist Jonet Williamson.

As the name suggests, vertical contouring is a makeup application method in which you go below the cheekbone and vertically contour the hollow area between it and the jawline. This is quite different from the traditional way, which usually involves a horizontal line across the cheekbone that goes to the temple.

Williamson recommends using a cream contour instead of powder, especially for lighter skin tones.

The technique is best suited for people with full cheeks or cheekbones that protrude more sideways than forward.

Celebrities such as Chrissy Teigen, Selena Gomez, or Jennifer Lawrence have a round face shape.

In general, the gold standard for contouring is to start with the hollow of the cheek, apply blush, and then finish with a highlighter, applying it closer to the eyes. Experts also advise experimenting with the "triangle method" to evaluate the difference and choose the technique that best suits your face type.
