Top 3 movies of 2023 that became a sensation in the world

Every year, on September 9, Ukraine celebrates the Day of Ukrainian Cinema, which has become increasingly high-quality, dynamic and professional over time. Even the full-scale invasion of Russia did not stop the development of Ukrainian cinema, and in some cases even gave impetus to the plots of films that are enjoyed far beyond Ukraine.

On the day when Ukrainians congratulate actors, directors, screenwriters, stuntmen, cinematographers and others involved in the creation of cinema, OBOZREVATEL decided to recall the top 3 global sensations of 2023 (to watch the video, scroll to the bottom of the page).

"Mavka. The Forest Song"

The movie"Mavka. The ForestSong, which is considered the most expensive in the history of Ukrainian cinema, was released on March 2, 2023. The premiere had been awaited for 7 years, but it was often postponed for various reasons. During this time, the main characters were redrawn, and the picture was finalized so that it was in no way inferior to foreign animations.

Long before 2023, at the largest European animation forum, the Ukrainian cartoon received feedback from The Walt Disney Company (Germany, Switzerland & Austria), Annecy International Animated Film Festival, CANAL+, TF1 International, Super RTL, who were pleasantly surprised.

Mavka was screened in France, the United States, Canada, Croatia, Poland, Italy, Spain, the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, Romania, and other countries. In some places, the film became a leader in terms of screenings in the first days of its release. During the first week of its release in Ukraine, the film grossed UAH 24.9 million, which is a record for box office receipts among Ukrainian releases.

Ukrainian director Dmytro Sukholytkyi-Sobchuk's film Pamphire was praised in Cannes before its world premiere, where it received a record 6 minutes of applause. The drama tells the story of a good family man who is thrown a test by fate, where he has to turn from the honest path for the sake of his family.

"Pamfir will compete for the Oscar 2024, as it became known recently. The film has already been shown and continues to be shown in cinemas in more than 20 countries. In June 2023, the authoritative British publication The Guardian included Pamphire in its list of 37 best films of the year. The rights to show the movie were also acquired by the streaming platform Netflix.

On August 24, Ukrainian cinemas premiered the adventure and historical drama Dovbush directed by Oles Sanin. This is the most expensive and largest film in the history of Ukrainian cinema. Its budget amounted to about UAH 120 million, 65 million of which was provided by the state.

More than 20 countries have already bought the rights to screen the film, and it has already been released in seven. The film will be screened in the Baltic States, Germany, Slovakia, South Korea, and Israel, and the process of buying the rights has just begun, the director said. You can read reviews and reasons to watch Dovbush here.

Earlier, OBOZREVATEL wrote about 8 iconic places from the movie Dovbush that you should definitely visit. All of them were used for filming vivid scenes.
