This tiny Spanish city has been named one of the most beautiful in the world
Spain is a country where medieval atmosphere is combined with amazing nature and a modern lifestyle. In the heart of the Collsacabra Space of Natural Interest in Catalonia, there is a charming town of Rupit i Pruit, which is recognized as one of the most beautiful in the world.
It is located not far from Barcelona. The rather interesting name comes after two villages, Rupit and Pruit, were merged in 1977. Now the municipality, which is home to less than 300 people, has been named "the most beautiful city in the world", according to United Nations World Tourism Organization. The details were reported by the Express.
Rupit i Pruit has a thousand-year history and many well-preserved buildings from the 17th century. The city is surrounded by natural beauty, as it is located in the heart of the Collsacabra natural monument at an altitude of 822 meters above sea level. It is literally carved into the rocks. Stone houses with peaked roofs create a unique medieval landscape.
The settlement grew up around the castle, which, along with the church of Sant Joan de Fabregues, was documented since 968.
The cobblestone streets and stone houses will take you back in time. Rupit i Pruit also it boasts a wooden suspension bridge that can only support 10 people at a time.
The old part of the city is located on a narrow ridge above the river, and some streets go up the hill. There are also some new houses built near the river and in a small valley behind the ridge. Some of the houses, by the way, are valued at over a million euros.
Outside the city, there are many lush forests, caves, prehistoric tombs, waterfalls and cliffs that will definitely appeal to adventure lovers.
Rupit i Pruit has a Mediterranean mountain climate with hot summers and cold winters, much colder than on the coast due to its altitude and distance from the sea. While frost is a common occurrence between October and April, snow also falls during this period, but does not stay for long.
The cultural and natural heritage of the city has a uniqueness that needs to be protected. Many of its resources are recognized and protected at both regional and national levels.
Surrounded by mountains and forests, Rupit i Pruit offers excellent opportunities for hiking, cycling and other outdoor activities. It is an ideal place for those who want to take a break from the hustle and bustle of a big city and enjoy the peace and quiet.
The most convenient way to get to Rupit i Pruit is by car. From Barcelona, the journey takes about 1.5 hours. You can also use public transportation. There are other interesting medieval villages nearby, such as Besalú and Tossa de Mar.
