Residents post beautiful and somewhat mystical footage online, which shows the sea glowing with bright blue light with every movement of the water.

This fantastically beautiful phenomenon can most often be seen in late summer and early fall. It occurs thanks to millions of small microorganisms - plankton - that have the ability to bioluminesce or to glow.

In the Black Sea, the glow of water is caused by the planktonic Noctiluca scintillans. It begins to glow at water temperatures above +24.

The glow seems to flare up with every physical impact, like a boat passing by or a wave rolling.

Usually, such a glow can be seen in the Black Sea from the end of August. But this year, it was much brighter than usual, and now the sea in Odesa glows at night with an extremely intense light blue color

You can see the Noctiluca scintillans only under a microscope. It is somewhat similar to a water lily leaf.

Noctiluca is found not only in the Black Sea as now it is spreading more and more. Scientists attribute this to global warming.
