Pearl of the Adriatic: top places to visit in Montenegro in the off-season
With the onset of cold autumn, we immediately begin to miss the warm summer sun. And the thought of winter ahead makes us very sad, especially if you haven't had time to relax. But don't wait for next year! You just need to go on a trip to the "velvet" country. We'll tell you where to go and what to see below.
Kotor
Kotor is located on the shores of the bay of the same name. The city was founded in pre-Christian times. From 1395 to 1420, it was considered an independent part. It was also included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.
In Kotor, you should start your trip with the St. Tryphon Cathedral. It was built in the XII century. Today it is the seat of the Roman Catholic diocese. Tourists will be able to see frescoes from the 1300s and 1400s, as well as a collection of various objects. Some interesting things like a silver hand and a cross are kept here.
Next, head to the Pima Palace. It was built in the Renaissance style in 1667. However, in 1979, a powerful earthquake struck Montenegro and damaged the building. It was reconstructed the same year. Here you can see the unique family coat of arms of the former owners.
Also, take a walk in the Old Town of Kotor. It hides Venetian motifs. By the way, this area is surrounded by fortress walls. They stretch for 4.5 kilometers.
Bar
It is located on the Adriatic coast. It is one of the sunniest cities in Europe. It is almost always warm here, with more than 270 such days a year.
Be sure to visit the local aqueduct. It was built during the Ottoman occupation of Montenegro. There are 17 pillars and the same number of arches. Once upon a time, the structure helped supply the entire population with water. Unfortunately, in the 70s, it suffered significant damage.
Also, visit the King Nikola's Palace, which is surrounded by a botanical garden. There is also an ethnographic museum. You can also see the foundations of an ancient church dating back to the sixth century.
And, of course, go to Topolica Market, the largest market in the country. Here you can buy sweets, fruits, vegetables, clothes, and souvenirs. It also sells natural olive oil and various types of alcoholic beverages.
Durmitor National Park
The natural center was created in 1952. In 1980, it was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List. It includes the canyons of the Tara, Sušica and Draga rivers, as well as the upper part of the Komarnica plateau.
We recommend going to the Black Lake. It is included in the ecosystem of unique glacial reservoirs. Its area is more than 516 thousand square meters.
There are many hiking trails here. Along the routes, there are benches where you can take a break. We also recommend visiting the Nacionalni Restoran Crno Jezero restaurant. It is located near the coast. Here tourists can taste Montenegrin national cuisine. In particular, pršut jerky and goat cheese.
Ostrog Monastery
Serbian Orthodox shrine. It is located in the mountains at an altitude of 900 meters above sea level. The religious building was built in the XVII century. It houses the relics of St. Basil of Ostrog, the founder of the monastic house.
An interesting fact: his remains are considered miraculous. That is why pilgrims from all over the world come here.
In the upper part there are several small churches decorated with frescoes. In the lower part, there is the Holy Trinity Church and living quarters for monks and travelers.
Buses from Podgorica regularly run to the location.
Cetinje
The town was founded in 1482. It is often called the cultural and historical capital of the country. It was here that the national identity of Montenegrins was formed.
Be sure to visit the Lipska pećina karst cave. It is one of the largest in the country. By the way, some of its dungeons are covered with snow and ice almost all year round.
Also, visit the Museum of King Nikola. It was built in 1863. The monarch lived in this house for over 50 years. It houses a collection of medals and orders, traditional costumes, military uniforms, ancient weapons and military artifacts.
Also, go to Njeguši. The village is located near Cetinje on the slope of Mount Lovćen. It is known as the birthplace of the royal Petrović-Njegoš dynasty, which ruled here from 1696 to 1916. The village is also famous for its traditional cheeses and pršutas.
