Italy has figured out how to reduce the number of tourists

To reduce the excessive number of tourists in the most famous cities of Italy, such as Florence, Venice, and Rome, the government plans to increase the tourist tax. The authorities intend to increase the state fee for a night stay in the most expensive hotels to 25 euros. Currently, this amount varies from 1 to 5 euros.

According to The Independent, in this way, the parliament wants to make tourists "more responsible" and increase financial assistance to disadvantaged areas of the country. If the decision is adopted at the legislative level, the tax will depend on the rates charged by hotels.

For a higher-end room that costs more than 750 euros per night, you will have to pay a fee of 25 euros, while for the most economical accommodation option, only 5. The tax for mid-range rooms will vary from 10 to 15 euros, depending on the hotel.

"In times of excessive tourism, we are discussing actions like this to help improve services and make the travelers who pay for it more responsible," explained Daniela Santanche, Italy's Minister of Tourism.

For her part, Barbara Casillo, director of the country's hotel association, noted that the government should be very careful with such decisions in order not to lose potential visitors, as international competition is quite fierce.
