Vacations aren't always associated with eventful activities, outdoor recreation, and loud parties. Sometimes you just want to relax and enjoy the moment.

The Guardian has published a rating of the best European destinations for a quiet vacation. From a leisurely cruise in French Provence to the pristine northern archipelago of Farne – everyone will find an option to their liking.

Cruise on the Rhone in Provence

Provence is an ideal option for a gastronomic tour or a relaxing vacation. A cruise on the Rhone River from Lyon to Avignon will bring an unforgettable experience. Instead of rushing to see all of France, try to embrace the slower pace of a river cruise, allowing the beauty of Provence to unfold gradually. The route will pass vineyards and lavender fields. You can make stops to taste local wines and cheeses. Medieval villages along the way will take you back in time. It's more than a trip – it's a dive into the heart of Provence.

Istanbul

The best way to see and experience Istanbul is to take the public ferries that cross the Bosphorus, connecting the two sides of the city – one in Europe and one in Asia. Choose a seat on the deck and sit on a simple wooden bench, sip freshly brewed tea, ideally with a piece of simit (sesame seed bread), and enjoy the views of the ancient city. The best way to get there is from Eminönü, near the Golden Horn, to Üsküdar.

Farne Islands

On Serenity's Sunset Cruise in Northumberland, you can see the sunset as you sail around a beautiful part of the coast near Bamburgh Castle. You may also encounter seals and a group of dolphins that often follow tourist boats.

Northern Sicily

From Palermo to Messina, you can see the incredible coastline of northern Sicily by train. Take the train from central Palermo and be sure to stop (about halfway) for lunch in Cefalù, one of the most beautiful coastal towns in all of Italy. After a few hours, take the train to Messina again (there are many trains on this Trenitalia line) to follow the promenade to Porto di Messina, where you can watch a beautiful sunset.

Utrecht

If you want to relax: the best destinations for a quiet vacation in Europe

Enjoy the center of Rotterdam, a mix of history and modernity, before taking the train (approx. 30 minutes) to Utrecht. Here you can paddle through a network of canals framed by attractive streets. Historic buildings and flower-filled facades create an atmosphere of coziness and comfort. Utrecht is also known for its parks near the city and its network of bicycle routes. Visit the  Amelisweerd, a picturesque area where you can swim in the river, take a walk in the woods, or visit a museum before cycling back to the city.

Landwasser Viaduct in Filisur, Switzerland

If you want to relax: the best destinations for a quiet vacation in Europe

The Bernina Express from Chur, Switzerland to Tirano, Italy, offers a stunning rail journey through the Alps. Admire snow-capped peaks, alpine meadows, and the Landwasser Viaduct. The train's slow motion and panoramic windows make it ideal for enjoying the scenery. Traveling from Switzerland to Italy, you will experience a sharp transition from snow-capped peaks to sunny vineyards.

The fishing village of Cudillero in Asturias

If you want to relax: the best destinations for a quiet vacation in Europe

Deserted stations will punctuate the journey across bridges and mountain gorges towards Asturias. The single-track Feve branch line is a well-kept secret of northern Spain. The line stretches from the Asturian capital of Oviedo to the northeast to Ribadesella with its stunning beaches. The other line leads to beautiful Cudillero, where fishermen's houses are spread around the harbor, bathed in the mixed aromas of fish dinner and apple cider. Asturias is a region where it is worth staying to enjoy the true Spanish flavor.
