Granite countertops have long been synonymous with elegance and luxury in kitchen interiors. Their natural beauty and unique texture add sophistication to any room.

Despite its longevity and durability, granite also needs proper care to remain radiant and flawless. How to properly clean it was covered by Martha Stewart.

As a natural stone, granite has excellent characteristics that make it an ideal choice for kitchen countertops. It is scratch resistant, can withstand high temperatures and is not prone to rapid wear and tear.

However, because granite has a porous structure that allows liquids to penetrate and leave marks, grease, water, food or wine stains can be a real problem. Even if your countertop is finished with a sealer, it doesn't guarantee complete protection from stains. Fortunately, proper care and timely cleaning can help keep granite surfaces in perfect condition.

How to remove oil stains

Oil stains are one of the most common problems for granite countertops, so it's important to remove them as soon as possible.

First, you should gently blot the stain to absorb as much grease as possible. Then, you should mix a few drops of natural soap with warm water and soak a microfiber cloth in this solution. When cleaning the dirty area, be careful not to scratch the surface of the countertop.

Afterwards, rinse the spot with clean water and wipe it dry. If the stain still remains, you can make a paste of cornstarch and water, apply it to the contamination and leave it overnight. In the morning, remove the paste with a microfiber cloth, rinse the spot with water and wipe it dry.

How to remove food stains

To remove food stains, you should act just as quickly. As soon as a stain appears, you need to moisten a cloth in a solution of soap and water and gently rub it over the contaminated area, then rinse it with water and dry it with a clean cloth.

How to remove water stains

Even water can leave stains on the granite surface. To remove them, you can use the same solution of soap and water. Gently clean the area, rinse with clean water and wipe dry.

How to remove wine stains

If wine stains appear on your countertop, you should immediately blot them with a dry microfiber cloth. You should then use a solution of soap and warm water to clean the stained area.

If the stain does not disappear, you can make a paste of baking soda and hydrogen peroxide in a ratio of 2:1, apply it to the stain and cover it with plastic wrap for one day. Then wash the area with a soap solution and dry with a clean, dry microfiber cloth.

If none of these methods work to remove stubborn stains, try using a paste of baking soda and water. Apply it to the stain and leave it on overnight. In the morning, thoroughly rinse the area with water and wipe it dry.
