How to get rid of rust inside the dishwasher: an easy way
The dishwasher needs regular washing and cleaning. Dirt and bacteria can accumulate in the appliance, which leads to an unpleasant odor. Another potentially dangerous threat occurs when rust forms on the inside.
Rust can shorten the life of the dishwasher by clogging some of the device's components. Experts tell you how to get rid of rust inside the dishwasher.
An effective remedy
Regularly cleaning the inside of your dishwasher will help prevent rust from forming. One of the easiest ways is to use citric acid. It is safe to use on plastic or metal.
Citric acid acts on iron oxide, which is alkaline. When you combine an alkali with an acid, it creates a neutralization reaction that allows you to remove rust.
Step-by-step instructions
- This is the easiest way to use it. Pour the citric acid into the detergent container and close the compartment.
- Then turn on the normal cycle of the appliance. You can have dishes in the machine during this step as long as they do not have silver or gold trim or embossed designs. Repeat this process until all rust is removed from the inside of the machine.
- Run the last cycle with normal detergent in the dispenser.
- If the inside of your dishwasher is stainless steel, you may want to consider using liquid citric acid instead of crystals. There is a small chance that crystals can damage the steel.
How to prevent rust from forming
When minerals in hard water come into contact with wet metal, rust can form over time. Dishwashers have a protective coating on the inside to protect them from the minerals in hard water. However, this coating wears off over time. Rust stains can appear on any steel inside the appliance, including heating elements, interior panels, etc.
One of the best ways to avoid this problem is to open the dishwasher door slightly when you are finished.
Never use salt in the dishwasher. Mixing salt, water and steel will accelerate the formation of rust. Rinse off any excess salt from the dishes before placing them in the appliance. If you have hard water, installing a softening system can help prevent rust formation.
