How the "Titanic" looks like after 112 years underwater: researchers found the lost statue of Diana and showed a photo of the ship

The ship is breaking up
In the years since the White Star Line, Britain's largest premium passenger ship, sank after colliding with an iceberg on its maiden voyage on April 14, 1912, researchers have already presented stunning images of the bow of the liner, which killed 1,517 people on board. However, new photos taken this summer show that the ship has changed.

During the latest RMS Titanic Inc. expedition in particular, the U.S. company discovered that part of the previously undamaged railing around the front of the ship's upper deck had fallen off. The 4.5-meter-long section now lies on the seafloor.
"We are distressed by this loss and the inevitable destruction of the ship and wreckage. Over the next few weeks and months, we will be conducting a more thorough analysis of the Titanic's condition and how it has changed over time. While the ship's collapse is inevitable, this evidence reinforces our mission to preserve and document what we can before it is too late," the company said in a statement on its official website.
More than two million photographs were taken during Expedition 2024.

The company's latest, ninth expedition since its first visit to the wreck in 1987, involved ocean imaging experts, oceanographers, scientists and historians. Experts from different disciplines worked together to acquire new images of the liner's wreckage to review its condition, identify artifacts and areas of risk, and provide input on current measures to preserve the remains.
Goddess Diana
According to the researchers, more than two million photos were taken, which the team used to search for valuable artifacts. And this search was crowned with great success. On the last day of the expedition, the researchers found and photographed a bronze statue of Diana, the Roman goddess of nature and hunting, 60 centimeters high.

According to the company, the statue, which once stood on the fireplace mantle in the center section of the Titanic's first-class lounge, was torn off and thrown into the debris field when the ship split in half and sank.
Although the figure was photographed during the 1986 expedition, its whereabouts remained unknown until this latest expedition.

Most of the artwork that adorned the halls and rooms of the luxury ship was known to be made from organic materials that disintegrated after decades of immersion in the hostile ocean environment, the company said in a post on its Instagram page.
"But some artwork was created to stand the test of time, like the Roman goddess Diana, who sat on a mantelpiece in the first-class lounge. She watched over passengers for five days before being torn from her mantle and lost in the ocean," the report said.
"However, after 112 years on the ocean floor and a brief discovery in 1986, she still rests upright among kilometers of debris. Like the eternal Roman deities, she is timeless," summarizing the valuable find during the "Expedition 2024" of the year, employees of RMS Titanic Inc.
Experts worry whether the valuable statuette will disintegrate on the seafloor.

However, according to CNN, while scientists are trying to preserve its history, the legendary wreck is slowly dying. In fact, footage of a series of dives by the Triton Submarines research team was released in 2019 that showed the effects of salt corrosion, metal-eating bacteria and the effects of deep currents on the ship's decomposition.
