Catastrophe for all: Germany assesses possible consequences of a Russian bomb in Earth orbit

Dmytro IvancheskulNews
The worst-case scenario is an indiscriminate nuclear explosion in space

Anti-satellite nuclear space weapons, which, according to Western media, are being developed by the aggressor country Russia, could potentially destroy low Earth orbit for everyone. The international community should be concerned only by the fact that someone wants to get such a weapon.

This opinion was expressed by Major General Michael Trout, responsible for the German Military Space Command. According to him, it makes no difference whether this bomb is detonated in the high layers of the Earth's atmosphere or directly in space. One way or another, this will be the end of "the use of this global asset (orbit - Ed.)."

"No one will survive such an action - not a single satellite, not Chinese, not Russian, not American, not European," Trout said.

The weapon, which, according to CNN, is being developed by the Russians, is probably aimed at destroying all satellites in orbit, both foreign and their own. The idea is to use a powerful energy explosion that would turn the satellites into an orbiting "dead mass."

According to him, the worst-case scenario of an indiscriminate nuclear explosion in space that emits an electromagnetic pulse that fries a satellite in low Earth orbit would be devastating for everyone.

Trout notes that this is a major concern. He is confident that people with "rational calculation" would not even think of using such a weapon, as all the satellites in orbit would turn into debris, and a dense debris field would be created.

In addition, the destruction of the satellite network could lead to global chaos on the Earth's surface, as too many systems are tied to the use of satellites.

According to the director of the European Space Policy Institute, Ludwig Möller, if Russia takes out commercial satellites with a space bomb, it could cause up to trillions of dollars in damage and affect everything from the energy sector to the banking industry.

Earlier, OBOZ.UA reported that, according to Bloomberg, Russia could launch nuclear weapons into space this year.
