Homemade juicy chicken shawarma without mayonnaise

Shawarma is a popular pita bread dish that is very easy to make at home. If you want it to be juicy, it is better to cook it with chicken and use a different sauce instead of mayonnaise. This will make the shawarma more healthy.

Ukrainian chef Anatolii (dobrovolskiy_hchef) shared a recipe for homemade shawarma with chicken and a delicious sauce without mayonnaise on his Instagram page.

Ingredients:

  • tortilla/pita bread - 5 pcs.
  • iceberg lettuce/cabbage
  • chicken thighs meat - 400-500 g
  • paprika - 1 tbsp
  • salt, pepper
  • oil for marinade - 2 tbsp
  • bacon - 150 g
  • pickled or fermented cucumbers - 100 g
  • hard cheese

Sauce:

  • sour cream - 2 tbsp.
  • ketchup - 2 tbsp
  • garlic - 1 clove
  • grain mustard - 1 tbsp.

Method of preparation:

1. Mix meat with salt, pepper, paprika and oil. Stir and fry in a pan or grill.

2. Cut and fry bacon as well.

3. Cut cucumbers into thin slices, chop cabbage and grate cheese.

4. Mix all the ingredients for the sauce.

5. Put the fried chicken on the pita bread, top with 1 tbsp of the sauce, bacon, cabbage, cucumbers and cheese. Roll up the pita bread.

6. Fry the shawarma in a pan or grill.
