Ainars Bagatskis is the head coach of the Ukrainian basketball club Kyiv-Basket.

Brief biography of Ainars Bagatskis

Ainars Bagatskis was born in Riga, Latvia, on March 29, 1967.

Bagatskis started his basketball career in 1985, in Riga basketball club VEF, for which he played two years, after which he moved to ASC Riga, for which he played the longest - four years.

Later he played for a number of different basketball clubs, including French Dijon and Norwegian Gimle. Ainars Bagatskis finished his career as a player in 2006, in the Latvian club Barons.

In the same BC "Barons" Bagatskis first tried his hand at coaching. However, he left Barons in 2007 and moved to Lithuanian Zalgiris, and a year later to BC Valmiera. After two years at Valmiera, Bagatskis took up coaching at Russian club Enisey.

At the same time, from 2010 until 2017 Ainars Bagatskis was the permanent head coach of the Latvian national basketball team, but at the end of the European Championship 2017 he decided to leave this post.

In the 2011 season Ainars Bagatskis coached the Ukrainian basketball club Kryvbasbasket from Krivoy Rog, and in 2012 he took over as coach of the legendary Kyiv BC Budivelnik, with which he worked for the next two years.

After working with basketball clubs in Germany, Turkey, Israel and the Russian Federation, in 2019 Ainars Bagatskis returned to Ukraine again, taking up the position of coach of BC Kyiv Basket, while also taking up the position of coach of the Ukrainian national basketball team.

Under the leadership of Ainars Bagatskis BC "Budivelnik" twice became the champion of Ukraine. And "Barons", where Ainars Bagatskis was a playing coach, became the Lithuanian champion thanks to him.

Among personal achievements of Ainars Bagatskis:

  • Two-time title of coach of the year in Latvia;

  • The title of the winner of the three-point shot contest in the Lithuanian All-Star Game;

  • Title as head coach of the All-Star Game in the Israeli championship.
