British Foreign Secretary David Cameron urges Germany to provide Ukraine with long-range Taurus missiles

British Foreign Secretary David Cameron has called on the German government to provide Ukraine with long-range Taurus missiles. He emphasized that this would greatly help Ukraine in repelling Russia's full-scale armed aggression.

Cameron also rejected the arguments voiced by German Chancellor Olaf Scholz that the transfer of Taurus to Kyiv could lead to an escalation of the war. He said this during a visit to Germany on March 7, DW reports.

The publication notes that the head of British diplomacy in Berlin "urged" the German government to transfer long-range missiles to Ukraine.

"As for long-range weapons, I can tell you from the UK experience how effectively such weapons have helped Ukraine repel illegal aggression," Cameron said after meeting with his German counterpart, German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock.

The British foreign secretary also disagreed with Scholz, who argued that the refusal to hand over the Taurus could lead to an escalation of the war.

"We have had this debate many times since the Russian invasion two years ago. For example, they said that If we supply Ukraine with anti-tank weapons, there will be an escalation. In the end, it did not happen. They said that if you give Ukraine tanks, there will be an escalation. It did not happen. If you give Ukraine long-range artillery or long-range missiles, there will be an escalation. No, nothing will happen again," Cameron reminded.

In his opinion, Western partners should do everything possible to help Ukraine defend itself. With the exception of sending NATO troops to Ukraine, there should be no restrictions on such assistance.

"When it comes to helping the country defend itself against illegal and completely unjustified aggression, there should be no obstacles. As long as we do not get into a situation where a NATO soldier kills a Russian soldier, we are not contributing to escalation but helping Ukraine to defend itself," the British official emphasized.

As reported, in early March, Scholz gave a new excuse for why Germany is not giving Ukraine Taurus. He noted that in case of "misuse", the missile with a range of 500 km could hit targets, for example, in Moscow. In addition, if Germany were to supply the missiles, it would have to be directly involved in their launch, and Berlin is not ready to send its military to Ukraine.
