Japan's Prime Minister declares a "turning point" amid Russia's war against Ukraine: details
Japanese Prime Minister Kishida Fumio said that events in the international arena are pushing the world and his country to take decisive and unexpected actions. In particular, Japan has decided to change its defense posture.
He made this statement before his meeting with U.S. President Joe Biden, which will take place next week, CNN reports. In this regard, the head of the Japanese government recalled Russia's war against Ukraine and the situation in the Middle East.
"As we are witnessing Russia's aggression against Ukraine, the situation in the Middle East, and the situation in East Asia, we are facing a historic turning point. That is why Japan has decided to strengthen its defense capabilities fundamentally, and we have significantly changed Japan's security policy on these fronts," he said.
Kishida emphasized that Japan is monitoring the cooperation between Russia and the DPRK closely. He called this cooperation "alarming from the point of view of international order and stability."
The Prime Minister noted that in the face of security challenges, the Japan-US alliance is becoming "increasingly important."
The media reminded that since taking office, Kishida Fumio has been advocating unwavering commitment to Ukraine and close support for the G7 countries' position on Russia.
On Wednesday, the Japanese prime minister will meet with Biden in Washington, D.C., address a joint session of Congress, and take part in the first trilateral summit between Japan, the United States, and the Philippines.
"The Kishida-Biden summit has been described by Washington as a historic opportunity for the two countries to modernize their alliance, as both countries see regional threats ranging from North Korea's weapons tests and growing relations with Russia to China's aggression in the South China Sea and against Taiwan," the article says.
