Russia's Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Vasily Nebenzya, spoke in support of Iran, which carried out a massive attack on Israel on the night of April 14. According to the Russian representative, Iran's shelling of Israeli territory "did not happen in a vacuum".

"Iran's steps were a response to the shameful inaction of the UN Security Council, a reaction to Israel's blatant attack on Damascus," he tried to justify Russia's partner country.

Nebenzya accused the West of allegedly hushing up the reasons for the escalation. Washington, London, and Paris had previously refused to reaffirm "the basic principles of international law regarding the inviolability of diplomatic and consular facilities."

The Russian called the Security Council meeting a "parade of hypocrisy and double standards."

As a reminder, a strike on the annex to the Iranian consulate in Damascus on April 1 killed Mohammad Reza Zahedi, the senior commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps' Quds Force, as well as six other high-ranking IRGC military officers. Jerusalem has not officially recognized responsibility for this operation.
