Ukraine has never managed to shoot down Russian X-22 missiles: the Air Force has given the reason

Air defence forces have not yet been able to shoot down the X-22 hypersonic missile

Russia continues to shell Ukrainian cities, including Lviv, Dnipro, Lutsk, Khmelnytsky, Zaporizhzhia and Smila on the night of 15 August. Air defence forces managed to shoot down 16 targets. However, missile defence forces have never managed to shoot down an X-22 hypersonic missile.

This was announced by the spokesman for the Air Force Command of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Colonel Yuriy Ihnat, during the United News telethon. Thus, on the night of 15 August, the occupiers attacked Ukraine using missiles of various types, including the X-22. However, they can only be destroyed by Patriot air defence systems.

Ihnat noted that despite the fact that the X-22 missiles are cruise missiles, they are also supersonic and travel at a speed of about 4,000 kilometres per hour. Additionally, the X-22s follow a ballistic trajectory, making them difficult to destroy.

"None of the X-22 missiles have ever been destroyed, not just today," Ihnat said.

He noted that today Russia launched a missile attack on the Donetsk region using this type of missile. Four X-22 missiles were launched from six Tu-22M3 fighters. A total of 24 missiles were launched, and missile defence systems managed to destroy 16 of them.

"Yes, we would like to shoot down more missiles, to achieve the result we had the day before, when the Operational Command "South" had a 100% success rate. But 16 out of 24 is also a pretty good result," said Ihnat.

Residents of Dnipro also spoke about a nighttime missile attack by Russian terrorist forces on 15 August. They said it was very scary, the missile whistled loudly and an explosion followed, causing the surrounding buildings to shake.

In Lviv, the missile attack caused significant damage. In the regional centre, the falling debris damaged residential buildings and destroyed a kindergarten, causing fires and injuring several people;
