White House working on Plan B to continue military aid to Ukraine: Politico reveals details

The administration of US President Joe Biden has found a workaround to extend presidential authority to send $5.9 billion in weapons to Ukraine by the end of September. This will allow the supply of weapons to Kyiv to continue without Congressional action.

This is reported by Politico. The publication notes that without this "plan B", these funds may "burn up" after the end of the fiscal year on October 1.

In April this year, the US Congress passed a $61 billion aid package for Ukraine. As of now, 5.9 billion dollars have not been used.

It is noted that presidential powers, which are part of this aid package for Ukraine, allow the Pentagon to use its stockpiles to quickly transfer weapons and equipment to Ukraine. And the allocated funds are spent on replacing this equipment in US arsenals.

But this authority expires at the beginning of the new fiscal year. The White House is working to extend this authority beyond October 1 without congressional approval as previously planned.

"This new workaround, which requires the administration to say it will use up the remaining aid in the coming months, will allow the Pentagon to continue sending weapons to Kyiv. However, under this method, the United States will not be able to introduce new types of equipment that were not included in previous shipments," the newspaper explains.

Pentagon spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Charlie Dietz said that if this is implemented in time, "the supply could go beyond the fiscal year without any problems."

While the White House wanted Congress to include the 5.9 billion in a funding plan that would keep the government open beyond October 1, this option would keep money available to help Ukraine even without congressional action.

As a reminder, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is in the United States, where he plans to attend a session of the UN General Assembly and present Ukraine's "victory plan" to US President Joe Biden. He also wants to familiarize presidential candidates Kamala Harris and Donald Trump with it.
