Ukraine has dealt Russia a painful blow by launching an operation in the Kursk region and taking control of a part of this Russian region. The success of Ukrainian soldiers has become a disgrace for the "second army of the world," which lost a huge amount of equipment and personnel in Ukraine.

However, Western analysts believe that Russia will try to recapture the part of Kursk region controlled by the Ukrainian Armed Forces by the end of October. This is stated in the article by The Times.

The publication notes the success of the Defense Forces' operation in the Kursk region. In the future, journalists expect Russia to retaliate and that Moscow will eventually gather for a counteroffensive in this Russian region.

"Russia is expected to counterattack near Kursk before the onset of winter in late October. Western analysts agree that the Ukrainians will not want to try to hold on to all the positions they have captured," the article says.

However, whatever the outcome of the Kursk operation, it is now a triumph for Ukraine and a disgrace for the "second army of the world."

"For now, it's a success for Zelenskyy and a disgrace for the Russian military, which has already lost 15,000 armored vehicles and 6,000 tanks and has been forced to deploy old T-54 tanks, a 70-year-old model that was decommissioned more than 40 years ago," The Times describes the current situation for Russian troops.

Meanwhile, the newspaper adds, the UK is preparing for the likely arrival of Donald Trump as US President following the November elections. The government of current British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, along with former high-ranking officials Boris Johnson, Grant Shepps, and Ben Wallace, is trying to strengthen support for Ukraine from democratic countries. As former British Defense Secretary Shapps noted, Ukraine's defeat in the war against the aggressor would be a catastrophe for the whole world.

"A democratic country invaded by its autocratic neighbor is a disaster not only for that nation, but for the whole world. Therefore, democracies must stop at nothing to ensure the victory of freedom. We cannot just hope that Ukraine will defeat Russia, we must also provide the means," he emphasized.

Earlier it became known that Russia lost six more settlements in the Kursk region overnight. As of August 18, the Ukrainian Armed Forces are approaching the key artery of the region.

Currently, the most active fighting is taking place in the Hlushkiv district. Most of the district, including the administrative center of Glushkovo, is cut off from Russia after the destruction of bridges across the Seim River. At the same time, several thousand Russian troops are surrounded in the Glushkovo district. So the only way for them to escape is to surrender border checkpoints, military bases and warehouses, military equipment, and leave the cut-off area on foot.
