The United States of America and the European Union have reacted to the death of Ukrainian journalist Victoria Roshchyna in Russian captivity. The murder of the girl is another proof of the repressions used against Ukrainians by the aggressor state of Russia.

Thus, on Friday, the official Telegram channel of the US Embassy in Ukraine noted that they were deeply concerned about the death of Victoria Roshchyna in Russian custody. The diplomatic mission emphasized that Moscow must be held accountable.

"Her tragic death is a testament to Russia's ongoing abductions and imprisonment of journalists, a blatant attack on free media and the truth. Russia will be brought to justice," the statement said.

The EU has also reacted to the death of the Ukrainian journalist, emphasizing that it is "appalled" by the news. The statement was published by the press service of the European External Action Service.

"Her fate is a tragic reminder of the thousands of people detained in the occupied territories of Ukraine and in Russia, as well as of the repression used by the Russian authorities, in particular in Russia," the EU said.

They recalled that Russia was fully responsible for the fate of Victoria Roshchyna after she was detained in the occupied territories.

The European Union calls for "a thorough and independent investigation that will clarify all the circumstances of Victoria Roshchina's death as soon as possible."

"The EU is deeply concerned by Russia's ongoing practice of harassment, intimidation, and use of force against journalists and other media professionals working in the war zone... There must be no impunity for human rights violations and abuses against journalists. The EU emphasizes its determination to bring to justice all perpetrators and accomplices of war crimes committed in connection with Russia's war of aggression against Ukraine," the press service concludes.

On October 10, it became known that Ukrainian journalist Victoria Roshchyna, who was captured by Russians a year ago, died during her transfer to Moscow. According to the DIU, Victoria was on the exchange list and was supposed to be home soon.

The girl was captured by the enemy twice. The first time was in March 2022. She was detained by the Russian FSB in Berdiansk when she was preparing materials about the hostilities in the region. She spent 10 days in captivity.

In August 2023, the Russians detained Roshchyna again in the temporarily occupied territory from where she was reporting. Only in May 2024 did Russia admit that it was still holding the journalist captive.
