"What kind of a kink is that?": Russia becomes world champion under its own flag, but there is a nuance
The Russian national team has won the World Chess Boxing Championship. Chess boxing is a hybrid sport where two combatants play alternating rounds of blitz chess and boxing until one wins by checkmate or knockout.
The competition was held in Yerevan, Armenia. The Russians took first place in the team competition, followed by France and Germany.
Athletes from 22 countries took part in the competition, the largest representation in the history of the sport. The Russians, who are deprived of national symbols at all other international tournaments, were allowed to compete here under their flag. They won a total of 28 gold, 20 silver, and 25 bronze medals in various disciplines.
In the comments, Russian fans have thrown a real tantrum, commenting on their country's historic "achievement." Users mock the news, recalling quotes from the Soviet movies Gentlemen of Fortune and The Golden Calf, where chess matches ended in fights. "What kind of a kink is this?" one asked.
