Cough can be a sign of pneumonia

A cough is a warning symptom that should be a reason to see a doctor, as it may indicate the development of pneumonia. Most often, pneumonia is treated at home, but in severe cases, hospitalization is necessary.

According to Express., citing the National Health Service of England (NHS), pneumonia is usually caused by a bacterial infection, but it can also be caused by a virus, such as the coronavirus. Symptoms of pneumonia can develop suddenly within 24-48 hours or may appear more slowly over several days.

According to the NHS, anyone of any age can get pneumonia. However, certain groups of people are more susceptible to the disease, such as the elderly or young people.

"General malaise is the main sign," the NHS said.

Symptoms of the disease can be:

  • Shortness of breath.
  • Coughing.
  • Blue lips or face.
  • Feeling cold, sweating, pale or blotchy skin.
  • Rash.
  • Fainting.
  • Loss of concentration, drowsiness

The National Health Service warned that in pneumonia, coughing can be dry or produce thick yellow, green, brown or bloody mucus. At the same time, a person's breathing may be frequent and shallow, and shortness of breath may occur even at rest.

The NHS emphasized that less common symptoms of pneumonia are feeling unwell and having a headache. In some cases, people experience joint and muscle pain.

"Feeling disoriented can also be an indicator of the disease and is especially common in the elderly," the experts said.

They noted that in many ways, how the body reacts to pneumonia depends on what causes the infection, the age and general health of the person.

They emphasized that only a doctor can make a diagnosis and advised not to delay seeking medical attention at the slightest suspicion of pneumonia.

The doctors emphasized that if the disease is ignored, complications can occur.

"Complications of pneumonia are more common in young children, the elderly and people with pre-existing conditions such as diabetes," the doctors said.

The experts added that the main types of pneumonia are bacterial, viral and mycoplasma pneumonia. And people can also get infected while in the hospital, even in the intensive care unit on breathing machines.
