Verkhovna Rada abolished daylight saving time: what it means

Oleksiy LutykovNews
The Verkhovna Rada has canceled daylight saving time

The Ukrainian parliament has passed a new law abolishing daylight saving time in Ukraine. In the fall of 2024, it will be necessary to set the clocks back one hour for the last time.

After that, clocks in Ukraine will no longer need to be reset. This is stated in the draft Law on Timekeeping in Ukraine No. 4201.

MP Yaroslav Zheleznyak wrote on his Telegram that the parliament had passed a bill to abolish daylight saving time in Ukraine. The document was voted for by 261 MPs.

He also explained that this year, Ukrainians will switch to winter time on the last Sunday of October, and there will be no further daylight saving time from 2025.

The explanatory note states that the draft law is aimed at protecting public health, since, according to most scientists and doctors, the specified procedure for calculating time in terms of the annual switching of clocks one hour forward and backward has some negative consequences, causing a significant deterioration in the health of citizens during the period of adaptation to "summer" and "winter" time.

The MPs also explained that about 140 countries have never used seasonal time or have abandoned this practice. By the way, on March 26, 2019, the European Parliament also supported the idea of abolishing seasonal daylight saving time in 2021. 410 deputies voted in favor of the proposal, while 192 voted against. This decision was made based on the results of an online vote held in the EU countries, according to which 84% of EU residents voted in favor of canceling the transition to summer and winter time.
