The power of Netflix. The court made an unexpected statement on the case of the Menendez brothers who killed their parents

The court made an unexpected statement regarding the case of the Menendez brothers who killed their parents

After the documentary series Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story about the two Menendez brothers who murdered their parents 35 years ago, the court dealing with the criminal case decided to review the charges and the men's sentences. The public outcry and support for the convicts put pressure on law enforcement agencies.

According to the BBC, the review of the case may lead to a change in the sentence or a new trial. The hearing is scheduled to take place on November 26.

This statement was made by Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascon after law enforcement received numerous calls from viewers of the series "Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story". He also said that there was a "moral and ethical obligation" to consider the evidence presented by the brothers last year. It was about the fact that at the time of the murder, the teenagers were sexually abused by their parents and took their own lives to ensure their safety.

"During the trials, prosecutors claimed that greed was the motive for the murders, and evidence that the brothers spent most of their huge inheritance on Rolex watches, cars, and luxury real estate before becoming suspects made the case notorious in the United States. In the end, the first trial ended with the jury not reaching a consensus after the Menendez brothers filed allegations of domestic violence that had been going on for several years," the BBC reports.

It is known that the brothers were sentenced to life in prison. At the time of the murder on August 20, 1989, Lyle and Eric were 21 and 18 years old, respectively. That is, the men are now 56 and 53 years old and have spent almost all their lives behind bars.

Not only the fans of the series, but also celebrities came to the defense of the Menendezes. For example, American TV star and model Kim Kardashian called for their release. She wrote a long letter that was published in NBC News.

"Both brothers said that they had been sexually, physically and emotionally abused by their parents for many years. According to Lyle, the abuse began when he was only 6 years old, and Eric said that his father had been raping him for over 10 years. "After years of abuse and real fear for their lives, Erik and Lyle chose what at the time seemed to be the only way out - an incredible way to escape this nightmare," Kardashian defended herself.

Earlier, OBOZ.UA wrote in more detail about the case of the Menendez brothers and how they were imprisoned 8 years after the murder due to their recklessness. Almost immediately after the announcement of the series, the men were massively supported online.
