Plastic food containers are an integral part of modern life. They are convenient for storing food and transporting ready-to-eat meals. However, after the first use, a problem arises: food residues, grease, and odors are firmly absorbed into the plastic. Even thorough washing sometimes does not help restore the original appearance. In such cases, proven methods come to the rescue, allowing you to easily clean the containers.

The FoodOboz editorial team will tell you how to clean plastic containers. The containers will be perfectly clean.

1. Detergent + wipes

This method helps remove fresh dirt and grease. Fill a container with warm water, add 2 tablespoons of dishwashing detergent and a few pieces of paper towels or napkins. Close the container tightly and shake it well for 1 minute. The wipes will act as a mild abrasive to remove grease and stains.

2. Vinegar

Vinegar is a great odor eliminator and cleaner. Dissolve 4 tablespoons of vinegar in 200 ml of water, pour the solution into a container and leave it on for 15 minutes (or longer for tougher stains). Then wash the container and dry it. Vinegar not only cleans but also disinfects plastic.

3. Sugar scrub

This method is suitable for removing yellowness and old stains. Pour 1/4 cup of sugar into a container, add some detergent and 5-6 ice cubes. After an hour, when the ice has melted, pour off the resulting liquid and wipe the container with the remaining sugar. This method helps to get rid of even traces of spices such as turmeric.

4. Hand sanitizer

An unexpected but effective solution for removing old grease and restoring the bright colors of the container. Apply the antiseptic with alcohol to the stains or over the entire surface of the container, leave for an hour, and then wipe with a paper towel. Alcohol dissolves grease and removes dirt.

How to keep containers clean

To help plastic containers last longer, follow these rules:

  • Do not use metal scouring pads or abrasives.
  • Avoid soaking in very hot water to prevent the plastic from losing its shape.
  • Clean the containers immediately after use.
