World heavyweight champion Oleksandr Usyk was detained at the airport in the Polish city of Krakow. He was later released.

According to the Polish portal Przeglad Sportowy, Usyk was undergoing a special examination at the Academy of Physical Education in Katowice, which is why he was in Poland. Oleksandr cooperates with Dr. Jakub Chitsky, who practices at this Academy.

Jean Beleniuk posted two videos showing Usyk being taken away by law enforcement in handcuffs.

The boxer's wife also commented on the incident.

"Everything is fine, everything is fine! Oleksandr will explain everything later. There is nothing criminal. Good night, everyone," Kateryna wrote on her social media.

The Consul General of Ukraine in Krakow immediately went to the airport to clarify the circumstances of the situation.

"The Ukrainian side categorically rejects the attitude towards its citizen and champion demonstrated in the video. In addition, Minister Andriy Sybiga has already appealed to his Polish counterpart to immediately resolve this situation. The minister also instructed the consul general to express his protest and indignation at this attitude," reads the commentary of the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry spokesman, Heorhiy Tykhyi.

On the Internet, Ukrainian fans began to speculate about the reason for the detention of the Crimean. There were also traditional memes on this topic.

At 23:31 Kyiv time, Belenyuk published a new post on his Telegram channel, reassuring Ukrainian fans.

"Everything seems to be fine, Sanya should be released soon. I think he will announce the details himself. Good night, everyone," he wrote.

Serhiy Lapin, Usyk's coach, also reacted to the detention.

"Do not worry. Everything will be fine. It's just that the customs control service is neglecting its duties," Lapin wrote in a story.

President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky said that the boxer was already free.

"I was outraged by this attitude towards our citizen and champion. I instructed the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Andriy Sybig and the Minister of Internal Affairs of Ukraine Ihor Klymenko to immediately investigate all the details of the incident at the Krakow airport. As soon as I was informed that everything was fine, our champion was released and no one detained him anymore," the president wrote.

Usyk himself explained what happened at the Krakow airport as a misunderstanding. On his Instagram, the boxer wrote a short post thanking everyone for their concern.

In addition, Oleksandr paid tribute to the work of Polish security forces.

"Friends, everything is fine. There was a misunderstanding that was quickly resolved. I thank everyone who was worried. I thank Ukrainian diplomats for their support. And respect to the Polish law enforcement officers who perform their duties regardless of height, weight, arm span and regalia. Thank God for everything," the athlete wrote.
