Money down the drain: car brands with the least reliable engines are named
Choosing a car is not an easy task. It's important to find a reliable and durable model that will be a long-term investment, providing the perfect value for money. When you spend money on a luxury car at a hefty price, you expect it to last a long time.
However, data from Consumer Reports shows that some of the most desirable car models have poor engine ratings. Whether you're buying them new or used, these 10 car brands don't offer the best engine.
Jeep
Consumer Reports gave the Jeep Wrangler a pretty low rating. The car received a reliability score of 27 out of 100, while the Grand Cherokee received only 26 points. In addition to engine problems, you can expect issues with suspension and electrical system.
Volvo
4 The Volvo XC60 plug-in hybrid received a reliability rating of only 21 from Consumer Reports. Among the disadvantages are the electric vehicle's battery and charging, climate system, and interior electronics. In general, the latest Volvo models are not known for their reliability, according to HotCars.
Volkswagen
The Volkswagen Taos received a reliability rating of 47 out of 100 from Consumer Reports, ranking 8th among 13 subcompact SUVs. In addition to engine problems, drivers reported malfunctions with the electrical system and even brakes.
Land Rover
Consumer Reports gave the 2024 Land Rover Range Rover a terrible predicted reliability rating of only 30. And if something goes wrong, you could end up with an expensive repair bill. According to RepairPal, annual repairs cost about $1,200.
Jaguar
The new Jaguar F-Pace, a member of the luxury compact SUV segment, has a reliability rating of 30, according to Consumer Reports. Premium cars such as Land Rover and Jaguar are expensive to repair, in particular due to the high cost of spare parts.
Chrysler
According to Repair Pal, Chrysler ranks toward the end when it comes to reliability. Experts predict the annual cost of repairs at $608. Moreover, the new Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid received an even worse reliability score of only 14 points from Consumer Reports, so you should expect problems with the electric battery and electric motor.
Mercedes-Benz
In 2023, Consumer Reports ranked Mercedes-Benz 29th in terms of reliability. This year, RepairPal ranked Mercedes-Benz 27th out of 32. If something goes wrong, repairs can be quite expensive.
Ford
Experts say that Ford's quality has been mixed over the years. The new F-150 Lightning received only 2 points out of 5 for reliability. Despite taking first place in the electric pickup category, it doesn't survive competition.
Maserati
When you're paying over $100K for a sports car, reliability is no longer a question. However, Maserati received a low reliability rating.
"Not only are they ludicrously expensive to fix, but they’re prone to causing you more problems than joy in the long run," HotCars experts wrote.
Audi
According to HotCars, buying an Audi might not be a good investment if you're looking for a reliable engine. Newer models have performed well in Consumer Reports tests, but some engines don't deliver the performance you expect from such an expensive car.
