Growing tangerines at home is an interesting experience for indoor plant lovers. It is also an opportunity to get home-grown, tasty, and juicy citrus fruits.

Although tangerine is not one of the easiest plants to grow, the right approach and a little patience will help you succeed. Floristix Info told you how to grow it from seed.

Preparing the seed for germination

It is best to take seeds from fresh fruit that you have just eaten. Then they do not need to be soaked. It's also important to choose a few healthy, large, and whole seeds because not all of them will be able to germinate.

However, if you have dry seeds, you should wrap them in a damp cloth or napkin for a few days before planting. Remember to moisten the seed regularly.

Planting the seeds

Once the seeds have sprouted, it's time to plant them in the soil, namely in a mixture of 3 parts of soil substrate and one part each of humus, sand, and leafy soil, along with a few handfuls of clay. You will have to prepare the soil for planting yourself because the peat that is part of the ready-made substrates is harmful to the mandarin.

Seeds are planted in 200 ml glasses or in bowls with drainage holes no more than 9 cm deep. A layer of expanded clay or small pebbles must be placed on their bottom.

The seed should be buried in moist soil by about 4 cm. After planting, the crops should be kept at a temperature of 20-25 degrees.

Transplanting

After sowing, the first sprouts should appear within 3-4 weeks. If you have planted all the seeds in one container, then after the first four leaves appear, they should be planted in separate glasses. The next transshipment dive should be carried out when the roots of the plants fill the entire volume of the glass.

Care

After transplanting a young tangerine into a pot, it is important to properly care for it. First of all, the plant needs regular watering. Tangerines like moist soil, but do not tolerate stagnant water, so water it with settled water only when the top layer of the soil is dry.

You should also provide the plant with enough light. Tangerine trees like sunny places, so it is best to place the pot on a windowsill facing south or southeast.

A favorable temperature for the development, budding, and flowering of tangerine is considered to be between 16 and 18 degrees and at an air humidity of 60%. However, do not worry if the room is too hot. Mandarin can grow and bear fruit even at 40 degrees.

As for fertilization, it is not necessary during the dormant period. However, during the growing season, a solution of complex mineral fertilizer should be applied to the soil twice a month.
