How Apple CarPlay works with the new iOS 18: features that drivers will definitely appreciate

Apple has released its operating system: iOS 18. The biggest updates include the design of Photos, significant improvements to Messages and Mail, new ways to browse the web in Safari without ad distractions, improved privacy features, and more.

Soon, iOS 18 will introduce the Apple Intelligence AI system. Apple CarPlay also gets some great features with this new operating system that will be useful for drivers. The details were revealed by Motor1.

If you have an iPhone 15 Pro or later and have already updated to iOS 18, you will be able to use most of the new CarPlay features right away. Just connect to the car's on-board screen.

Apple Intelligence (18.1)

Apple Intelligence (or AI) is the name of Apple's new artificial intelligence software that will soon be available on iPhone. Currently, AI functionality is not available in the current iOS 18 update but should be available in version 18.1. Initially, it will be available only in a few countries, including the United States.

Apple Maps

Apple Maps users will notice a few changes to the overall design of the app. Some of the icons have been moved, and a slight glow makes them stand out on the screen. Even the location markers have become a little clearer thanks to a minor interface redesign.

Color filters

Similar to the color filter options on your smartphone, the latest version of CarPlay also gives you the ability to add color filters to your car's screen. This means that you can tint the entire display with a single color filter. This should be useful for helping with certain visual impairments. You can also turn on "bold text" for better visibility.

Improved Siri voice control (18.1)

One of the biggest changes is to Siri. According to Apple, the voice control system is now "specifically designed for driving scenarios." Bigger and brighter on-screen animations let you know Siri is listening. The entire screen bezel now lights up and pulsates when Siri is active. Unfortunately, this new animation won't be available in iOS 18 right away. The update is currently in beta and will be available on iOS 18.1.

Home Icon

A small but important update: Apple added a new Home icon to Apple CarPlay with iOS 18. Instead of three thin rectangles superimposed on each other and one larger one on the left, there is now a single rectangle that returns you to the CarPlay home screen.
