In Bulgaria, archaeologists found a statue of Hermes in an ancient sewer pipe. The sculpture of the ancient Greek god dates back to the second century AD.

The monument is the first of its kind found in Bulgaria. Scientists are amazed at how well it is preserved, Reuters reports.

The head of the archaeological team, Lyudmil Vagalinski, said the find is not only the best-preserved statue discovered in Heraclea Sitnitsa but also in all of Bulgaria. "His head has been preserved. It is in very good condition. There are a few fractures on the arms. But in general, the condition is very good," the scientist emphasized.

The discovery of the 2-meter-high marble statue was made during excavations at the site of the ancient city of Heracles Sintika in southwestern Bulgaria, on the slope of the Kozhukh volcanic hill near Petrich.

Vagalinski and the Petrich Historical Museum have been excavating in the area since 2007 and have discovered that the city of Heraclea, which lies near the Greek border, was quite modern for its time, as it was built with great elegance.

Vagalinski suggests that the statue was probably buried by the city's inhabitants after a strong earthquake in the fourth century AD to preserve their religious heritage during the spread of Christianity.

The found sculpture of Hermes is a Roman copy of the ancient Greek original. According to archaeologists, very few similar statues have survived in the world, and many are missing their heads.
