Differences in the date of Easter celebration between Orthodox and Catholics will remain
Easter, the main spring holiday, has always been one of the favorite holidays of Ukrainians. Its date changes every year and with it the dates of several related events and holidays, such as Lent or Trinity.
It is noteworthy that with the transition of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine to the New Julian calendar, the approach to calculating the date of Easter has not changed – this is the main difference that remains between it and the Gregorian calendar used by the Catholic and other Western rite churches. OBOZ.UA found out when the Orthodox and Catholics in Ukraine will celebrate the Easter holidays.
When will Easter be celebrated in 2024
In 2024, Orthodox and Greek Catholics in Ukraine will celebrate Easter on May 5. This is one of the latest possible dates. The holiday may fall between March 22 and May 8.
Meanwhile, Catholics and Protestants will celebrate Easter, on the contrary, earlier. Western rite churches will celebrate the Resurrection of Christ on March 31.
When does Lent begin in 2024
Accordingly, there will be differences in the date of the beginning of Lent. For Orthodox Christians, it lasts seven weeks, which means it will begin on March 18. It will be preceded by the celebration of Shrovetide and Forgiveness Sunday. The fast will end on May 4.
Catholics will begin the Lenten period much earlier. In 2024, it will begin on Valentine's Day. Lent for Christians of the Western rite will last from February 14 to March 30.
Both churches have the strictest requirements for the last week of the fast. Restrictions on food and entertainment during this period should be maximized.
