September 24, according to the New Julian calendar, is the day of remembrance of the first martyr Thekla, the equal to the Apostles. The life of Thekla is described in the apocryphon "The Acts of Paul and Thekla" dating back to the second century. Thekla was born in the city of Iconium into a wealthy family. The girl's parents professed paganism. Young Tekla was betrothed to a wealthy young man, and the girl seemed to be fine with the wedding, but at that time the apostle Paul was in town, and after listening to his sermons Tekla became interested in the new faith and decided not to marry. She wanted to devote her life to ministry. The governor of the city ordered the arrest of the apostle. Tekla secretly visited Paul in prison, giving the jailers her jewelry. When Tekla's parents found out where their gold was going, they took their daughter to the governor, who ordered her to be burned alive. Suddenly, a strong wind rose, a downpour came, and the flames went out. Tekla left her hometown and went to Antioch with the apostle.
