August begins the transition from summer to fall, but it is still a time of active gardening. In particular, some types of flowers are planted in August, and some are transplanted.

OBOZ.UA has collected the main tips of experienced gardeners on this topic. They named the main species that need care and planting in August.

What flowers to plant in August

The end of summer is the best time to plant biennials in the flower garden. In this case, they will have time to take root and develop well by the end of the season, and bloom next summer. Pay attention to the packages of seeds. Those that are labeled as biennials can be sown. Species that can be planted in August include:

  • Chinese carnation. A decorative flower that comes in many varieties and colors.
  • Phlox. These flowers, depending on the variety, can bloom throughout the summer. Low-growing ones will produce stems about 40 cm high, while tall ones grow up to 60-90 cm.
  • Mallow. A tall perennial will have time to take root well before the onset of winter. However, plant mallows where they will be protected from the wind.
  • Garden chamomile. An unpretentious plant tolerates any manipulations when it is not in bloom, but in August, the procedures will be very effective because the heat begins to subside and this makes it easier for chamomile to take root in a new place.
  • Delphinium. Usually in August, summer showers stop and this allows the plant to take root better because it does not like excessive humidity.
  • Rudbeckia. A bright perennial garden flower takes root well when it is not planted, the main thing is to give it enough time to take root.
  • Garden bell. The plant begins to bloom in spring, so it is better to sow it in late summer of the previous season;
  • Daisy. The flower is grown in the garden as a biennial, so August will be a good time to sow it.

What flowers are transplanted in August

August is also a good time to transplant perennials that have already faded. These include primroses, lilies of the valley, lilies, alissums, saxifrage, irises, armeria, peonies, phlox, delphiniums, daisies, and more. It is important to observe the correct time intervals. Primroses are divided and transplanted at the very beginning of the month, and peonies in the middle. At the end of August, it's time to repot any bulbous flowers.

To transplant rhizome plants, dig them out of the ground, gently wash off the soil, and break or cut the rhizome into pieces so that each one has a bud - this will allow the plant to recover and reproduce. After separation, be sure to sprinkle the broken or cut area with ash or crushed charcoal, or treat it with copper sulfate to avoid infection.

Bulbs of lilies, tulips, daffodils and other similar plants are removed from the ground and examined. If the underground part has grown too much, it is divided into nests of bulbs, the sections are processed and planted. Plants sown or transplanted in August will bloom the following season. Small bulbs are separated from the stem and planted for growing to get a full-fledged blooming lily in two to three years.
