The Nordic-Baltic Eight (NB8) countries – Sweden, Norway, Estonia, Finland, Iceland, Lithuania, Latvia, and Denmark – will provide Ukraine with a "winter package" of financial assistance. It is about 44 million euros that will be used to purchase generators and solar panels.

The decision was signed by the foreign ministers of the NB8 countries during their visit to Ukraine. "We have signed a package for another 44 million to help you close the gap in your energy infrastructure," Swedish Foreign Minister Maria Malmer Stenergard said at a general briefing, Ukrinform reports.

At the same time, Malmer Stenergard noted that the NB8 states also plan to "build up air defense forces" and support Ukraine's economy. Sweden contributed more than half of the funds to the energy package – 28 million euros. Since the beginning of the war, the country has provided €5 billion in support to Ukraine.

"We want to see Ukraine become a member of the EU. We want a just peace, and this peace is impossible without Ukraine," summarized Malmer Stenergard.

Earlier, Ukraine secured international assistance to meet its energy needs in the upcoming autumn and winter. It is expected that our country's partners will allocate at least EUR 386 million in total.

In particular, in September 2024, on the sidelines of the 79th session of the UN General Assembly, a meeting of the G7+ Ministerial Group on Energy Support to Ukraine was held. It discussed issues that will be among the key ones for Ukraine in the coming months.

"These are the protection of critical infrastructure, strengthening capabilities to support its functioning in the autumn and winter, restoring energy, and attracting investment and international assistance to this process," explained MP Danylo Hetmantsev ("Servant of the People").

Ukraine is preparing for winter: what has been done

According to the government, as of mid-October, more than 99% of residential buildings in Ukraine were ready for the heating season. That is, less than 1% remains to be prepared.

The readiness of schools, kindergartens, and hospitals is also approaching 100%. According to the Prime Minister of Ukraine Denys Shmyhal, more than 18,000 boiler houses and 4,800 central heating stations are ready to supply heat. According to him, this is the first area of winterization.

"The second area is the accumulation of resources. Currently, we have 12.2 billion cubic meters of natural gas in the gas storage facilities and 3.1 million tons of coal in warehouses. This is enough to get us through the winter. All 9 nuclear power units under Ukraine's control are now in operation," the Prime Minister assured.

The third area, he said, is the creation of a decentralized generation. As part of this, he noted, energy sustainability programs are currently being implemented.
