The UN reports that the world ' s population will peak in the mid-2080s at about 10.3 billion people. It will then drop to a level much lower than expected a decade ago.

The current population of 8.2 billion will rise to that maximum over the next 60 years and then drop to 10.2 billion by the end of the century. This is according to the World Population Prospects 2024 report, ScienceAlert writes.

A UN report says the world population in 2100 will be six percent lower, or 700 million fewer people, than expected in June 2013.

"Demographics have changed significantly in recent years," said Li Junhua, UN Under-Secretary-General for Economic and Social Affairs.

He said the population decline was due to several factors, among them lower birth rates in some of the world's largest countries, especially China.

According to the UN, more than a quarter (28%) of the world's population now lives in one of 63 countries or territories where the population has already peaked, which are China, Russia, Japan and Germany, the report said. And nearly 50 other countries are likely to join that group over the next 30 years, including Brazil, Iran and Turkey.

But population growth will continue in more than 120 countries after 2054. They include India, Indonesia, Nigeria, Nigeria, Pakistan and the United States, the UN said.

Researchers note that growth in life expectancy worldwide, interrupted by the Covid pandemic, has resumed. In 2024, life expectancy was 73.3 years. And in 2054, it will average 77.4 years.

The study predicts that by the end of the 2070s, the number of people aged 65 years and older will be 2.2 billion, exceeding those who are under 18 years old.
