On Saturday, November 4, the dismantling of the Soviet star from the obelisk began on Halytska Square in Kyiv. Part of the road is blocked for the work.

As you know, Halytska Square was called Victory Square in 1952-2023.

In 1982, an obelisk in honor of the hero city of Kyiv was erected in the middle of the square. It was inaugurated as part of the celebration of the 1500th anniversary of Kyiv.

Halytska Square itself was formed as a marketplace on the western outskirts of Kyiv in the mid-19th century. With the advent of the railway station, lively trade began there. In 1869, the square was named Halytska because it was the starting point of the road to Galicia.

In 1926, it was renamed 1905 Uprising Square (in honor of the Shuliavka Republic). In 1944, it was returned to its previous name. Unofficially, it was called the Jewish Bazaar or Yevbaz.

In 1952, Halytska Square was renamed Victory Square in honor of the victory in the German-Soviet war.
